Youssouf Diabate

Born in 1977, Youssouf Diabaté belongs to a family of Griots originally from kite in Mali. He is an accomplished musician, singer-songwriter and plays several instruments including the Ngoni and Tama.

A graduate of Institut National des Arts (National Institute of Arts) Bamako, Youssouf collaborated on many projects while in Mali with: The Ministry of Culture, the Ensemble Instrumental du Mali, Salif Keita, Kandia Kouyate, Ami Koita, Batoma Sissoko, Nene Soumano, Mama Draba, Sanounke Kouyate, Diabate and Samba Traore Benke.

In 2003 Youssouf moved to Paris. Since then he has toured around the world with various groups, including Vieux Farka Touré, Sekouba Bambino, Grand Corps Malade, Véronique Samson, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Dede Saint Prix, Thomas Sidibé, Ba Cissoko, N ‘ Dioba, Mande and Bossa Factory. In 2012 and 2014, Youssouf participated in recording albums for Thomas Sidibé.

The name of his ensemble is, DIABAKAN. They specialize in melodies organized around the Djely Ngoni, which surround the bass, and drums to create colourful sounds from the mix of Mandingo music, jazz, funk and Afrobeat.
